Making ALL Legislation “Clean”

Congress, 25485457_sLeading the March 3, 2015 news was the announcement that the House of Representatives had passed a “clean” bill to fund the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and avoid a government shutdown. “Clean” in this case meant free of the rider that would have ended the President’s executive action blocking the deportation of illegal immigrants.

Media pundits were excited by the announcement. That got me wondering.… Read More

Giuliani’s Distracting Remarks

Obama QUOTE, 4221359_sFormer NYC mayor Rudy Giuliani recently said, “I do not believe that the President loves America . . . What I’m saying is that, in his rhetoric, I very rarely hear him say the things that I used to hear Ronald Reagan say, the things I used to hear Bill Clinton say about how much he loves America. [On the other hand] I do hear him criticize America much more often than other American presidents.”

The President’s background and record seem to support Giuliani’s contention.… Read More

Overcoming Black Poverty

Detroit Decay, 20515621_sThe other evening I watched a talk-show debate between two Black analysts on the problem of poverty among inner city Black youth. Their views couldn’t have been farther apart at the outset and they didn’t grow any closer as the exchange continued.

One argued that the main problem is low wages and lack of employment opportunity for young Blacks and the solution is for the government to raise the minimum wage and expand job opportunities.… Read More

Politicians vs. the Rule of Law

RIOT sign 30075802_sIn Greek mythology, Pandora received a beautiful jar as a wedding present from the gods. With it came the command not to open it. Driven by curiosity, Pandora disobeyed the command and opened the jar, causing evil to escape and spread across the earth with no hope of containment.

In the modern political version of this story, Pandora is represented by foolish politicians and activists, and her jar is represented by their mouths, which emit mindless utterances that have produced dangerous and in many cases irreparable consequences.… Read More

Understanding Obama and Ourselves

Obama and Change Sign20803712_sWhy is President Obama so intent on changing America? And why have so many Americans supported the policies and programs producing the changes? Though the questions are almost identical, the answers are very different.

The answer to the first question is that Obama is an anti-colonialist. That is, he is outraged by the way western countries such as England, France, Spain, and Portugal colonized, subjugated, and controlled the peoples of Africa, Asia, and Central and South America.… Read More

Albert Einstein and Socialism

Einstein, 10887946_sSomeone recently sent me an article noting Albert Einstein’s favorable view of Socialism. Knowing that I have been critical of socialist ideas in the past, he asked whether Einstein’s statements changed my mind. It was a fair question.

After all, Einstein is widely considered one of the great scientific thinkers of all time, so it is tempting to reason that since he was able to unlock some of the deepest mysteries of the universe, he must have been able to discover political/economic insights.… Read More

Hillary Doubles Down on Benghazi

Hillary, Obama Re BenghaziHillary Clinton has resurrected the Benghazi issue in a forthcoming book, a chapter of which has been leaked to the press before publication. Her apparent intention is to demonstrate that she acted responsibly during and after the attack that killed four Americans. Many readers will be convinced by her arguments. I am not. To begin with, several statements reportedly contained in her book either ignore the facts or strain credulity.… Read More

Obama’s Perplexing Behavior

Obama SpeakingDid President Obama really say, “ I will not stand for this outrage” and then proceed to sit down? Well, not quite. But he might as well have. Making forceful statements and then doing nothing has been the President’s pattern with the Benghazi scandal, the “Fast and Furious” scandal, the IRS scandal, the Associated Press phone records scandal, the botched rollout of Affordable Health Care, the “Red Line” debacle with Syria, Russia’s annexation of Crimea, and most recently, the Veterans Administration (VA) hospital scandal.… Read More

Elder Abuse, Government Style

Geriatric Chair FinalThere are many good reasons for recommending geriatric chairs for individuals in Assisted Living Facilities (ALFs), particularly those with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. And yet the federal government and most state governments have classified the chairs as restraining devices and restricted their use. Good intentions notwithstanding, that action did a great disservice to our most vulnerable citizens.

Geriatric chairs, also known as geri-chairs, are mobile recliners, with ergonomically designed seats and backs of polyurethane-covered foam, and three different positions—in other words, the perfect chairs for non-ambulatory residents of assisted living facilities, allowing them to leave their beds and sit comfortably in the living room, on the porch, or at the dining room table.Read More

O’Reilly vs. Limbaugh on Obama

Limbaugh & O'ReillyAlthough media titans Bill O’Reilly and Rush Limbaugh are both critical of President Obama’s policies, they deal very differently with the President’s intentions. A close look at that difference in light of the western religious and philosophical tradition offers a clearer perspective on the President’s policies.

O’Reilly summarized his view on the Jimmy Kimmel show as follows: “I like Barack Obama as I liked George W.… Read More
